Progression of a Painting

Watch the Process.

This time-lapse video shows the progression of this watercolor painting from beginning to end. In this “NFL Logo Series” I use the watercolor paint in a glazing technique to stain the paper. Once the glaze is dry, painting over it again creates a darker shade. Using this technique, I create the illusion of ghost images of players at the line of scrimmage in front of the team logo.

Process

It all begins with an idea, then comes the process. The above video is a time-lapse recording of the creation of “Bucs SB LV Champs!” from start to finish.

When looking at the finished product, it may be hard to understand the depth and detail involved in my art. The purpose of this video is to give you a better idea of the amount of detail that goes into one of my paintings.

There are basically two stages to this painting. First, I use the transparency of watercolor to create a background with multiple layers. Then I use colored pencils to paint realistic images in the foreground that capture the viewer’s initial gaze.

My hope is that you will explore the painting and discover multiple layers of color studies, value studies, abstract shapes, planes, realism, and anything else you find interesting or fun.
